Can anyone identify this caterpillar?  We found it crawling on the car window.

Mystery Caterpillar

Kent is going to research with Gram and post his findings.  Can you beat him?

Here’s what Kent (He’s 9 years old the time of this writing) found out…

What is a Saddleback Caterpillar?

It’s a caterpillar with a green back and orange needles. It got his name from the saddle-looking brown shape on it’s back. Soon it will be a… you guest it, a moth.

Should I touch a Saddleback Caterpillar?

No way!!!!! Experts best advice: If stung, scream for “mamma”! Hold wounded body part tightly and wait half an hour, or so, until intense pain goes away. Seriously don’t touch his orange needles; repeat, don’t touch his orange needles. When you touch its the needles they stick on to you, and that’s not good.

Because his needles are packed with venom, when his venom injects you that’s not good either. Because his venom is liable to cause things including pain, a swollen rash, and an upset stomach, which could possibly lead to a stomach ache.

Where does a Saddleback Caterpillar live?

From Massachusetts, to Florida, to Texas.  He lives near the foods he eats.

What does a Saddleback Caterpillar eat?

Oaks, apples, asters, blueberries, roses, and corn.

Why would God make a Saddleback Caterpillar that can hurt you?

He didn’t.  After man sinned, we had to be punished. Gen. 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

God has an intention for everything Eccl.3:1 -A To everything there is a purpose… Anyway we should be thankful Eccl.3:12 I know there is no good in them but for a man to rejoice and to do good in his life.

Plus if saddle-back caterpillars were extinct, the animals that ate them would be extinct and the animal that ate those would be extinct and so on.  If that happened soon we wouldn’t have very many animals. And that’s where we hit Eccl. 3:1 -A again. There are many different reasons why God made the saddle-back caterpillar and that’s only four so this is my answer.
